Team GDJJ/Nova Uniao AZ will be traveling to Long Beach, California to compete against the best in the World at the IBJJF 2013 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship from May 29^th to June 2^nd. The IBJJF Dallas International Open took place on May 5th. GDJJ Academy was well represented by three competitors: Arnold Monterrso, John Owning and Brad Richardson. Arnold won the purple belt/adult/light feather defeating three tough opponents, John Owning took second place at the purple belt/adult/medium heavy and Brad took third place in the blue/adult/middle. Great job from team Nova Uniao who ended up in first place one more time at the Dallas Open.

On March 30th in Los Angeles, California it took place the WANT VS NEED Jiu-Jitsu Battle 2, a submission only format tournament. GDJJA competitor Thomas Keenan won the blue belt light weight division with three submissions and received $500 cash prize! Congrats Thomas. It’s been about one year since my last Sports Nutrition for Competitive Jiu Jitsu training class at the Gustavo Dantas GD Jiu Jitsu Academy in Tempe, Arizona. Gustavo has invited me back for a similar event on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 11:00am.

Nutrition as a High Percentage Move in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

This article discusses nutrition as a high percentage move in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Let’s lay the ground work, no pun intended, with a definition of a high percentage move. High percentage moves are moves with strong statistics that back their chance of success.

So how does that relate to nutrition? It relates to nutrition in that nutrition is a variable in the human performance / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu equation that you can control, provided you have the knowledge and discipline to execute it.

I usually say, “If I can control it, and if it’s a known influencer of success then I pay attention to it.”

This can be compared to the 80 / 20 Rule, also known as the Pareto Principle.

Many competitiors in many sports, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are walking away from percentage points in what I call “the success equation” by ignoring nutrition as a key variable. Although high quality nutrition is a high percentage move, it is not convenient. That’s OK. Success in any given project usually isn’t convenient.

In our society unless you are clear about what you will and won’t eat, you may find yourself eating whats easily available.

Another way of looking at it is, what’s convenient usually isn’t successful.

Is high quality nutrition the same for everybody? No. Everybody is, in varying degrees, biochemically unique. Nutrition is not cookie cutter, one size fits all. As an example, some people can thrive on a vegan or vegetarian diet. Others don’t.

Why is nutrition a high percentage move in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Nutrition is a high percentage move in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because nutrition is the raw material your body uses to repair tissue and microtrauma, regulate inflammation, build neurotransmitters, optimize biochemical and metabolic pathways at the cellular level. digest food, detoxify organ systems, squelch free radical activity and the list goes on.

Race car drivers use high quality fuel in their race car. You are a human race car. What is the quality of the nutrition you use to feed your body?

Macronutrients, proteins, carbs, fats, water, electrolytes, micronutrients, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals, amino acids, essential fatty acids etc. All are player in the nutrition equation. All have the potential to influence how well your body works on the matt and off the matt, in both the short term and the long term. The plot thickens due to synergism either on the upside or the downside based on how macronutrients and micronutrients are combined and in what volume.

I mention both short and long term. To progress in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or any discipline you have to be in the game long enough to evolve your game. That happens by getting huge numbers of reps which takes years. Any sport requires massive numbers of reps in order to push skill sets from the conscious mind to the subconscious mind. From conscious competence to unconscious competence. The subconscious mind is that place where you no longer think about it to execute it. In varying degrees it’s on automatic pilot.

High quality and well managed nutrition will influence the health and well being of your human race car so that you’re capable of training for many years, accumulating reps, evolving your game and fulfilling your potential.

2013 Vegas Spring International Open results

With a whole new edition to the Las Vegas Open in the spring, it gave Nova Uniao a chance to spread their wings and show what they are all about. The team did an incredible job, taking home the second place trophy. Thank you to all coaches and assistant coaches who worked very hard to make this happen. GDJJ/NU AZ captured 13 Gold, 7 Silver and 9 Bronze medals. Here are some of the standouts of the team:

Daniel Hampton

Christian Broadnax

Daniel Hampton won the adult/purple/Medium Heavy and took second in the Open Class. Daniel submitted six out of his seven opponents!

Christian Broadnax took first place in the brown belt/light weight division submitting all three opponents.

Nathan Hagberg submitted all his opponents in the adult/medium heavy/Blue belt. It was Nate’s first blue belt tournament.

Richard Young won the Senior 1/Blue/Ultra Heavy and the Open Class.

White Belt Check Point class (1st and 2nd Stripe) on 04/13

On April 13th there will be a white belt (1st and 2nd stripe) checkpoint class taking place at GDJJ Academy. From 10 am to 12:30 pm. Must be a white belt with at least one stripe to attend the class.

Checkpoints are mandatory 2 hour sessions that allow a student to review moves and positions from the curriculum that they may or may not be familiar with, making sure to go over the specific details that often/commonly get missed by students. A student will receive focused instruction and Checkpoints are an excellent resource for information that will help students towards their promotion. You must have attended to Check points (plus the Self Defense), in order to receive your diploma when promoted.

The 2013 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship took place in Irvine, California from March 20th to 24th. The largest Jiu-Jitsu tournament in the world brought 3000 thousand competitors to compete at the UCI Gym. Team Nova Uniao Arizona fought hard to capture 20 medals. Team GDJJ at the 8th AZ International Open

The 8^th AZ International Open took place in Phoenix, AZ on March 9^th & 10^th. Before the competition started, AZ State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation presented the awards for the 2012 School Rankings. Check out the GDJJ/Nova Uniao school who made to the top 10 schools of the State:

GDJJ Academy student, Sierrah Thrun, received the award of 2012 MVP for winning all competition in the season.

Team GDJJ/Nova Uniao had a great performance! In the Kids division, Steve Rosenberg’s program at GDJJ Academy secured the 1^st place, Michael Westbrook’s MWBJJ took 2^nd place and Joe Solorio’s, Primero BJJ took 5^th place. And in the Adult division, GDJJ Academy took the 1^st place and Paul Nava’s, Nava BJJ took 5^th place. Great job guys!

Thomas Keenan closed out the middle/adults division with teammate, Brad Richardson. Keenan also took second place in the open class.

Sione Manako repeated his performance of the 4^th Southwest Classic securing double gold in the Ultra Heavy & Open Class/ Senior 1 division.

BUSY MONTH!

Pan JJ Championship will take place in Irvine, California from March 20th to25th. The GDJJ/Nova Uniao AZ will be represented by 45 competitors!!! After the Pan, Kristina Barlaan and Sarah Black will be representing our team in Abu Dhabi!

Our team will be competing at the IBJJF Las Vegas Spring Open on April 27th. More info at http://www.ibjjf.org/. We have been taking second place as a team for the past three years (which is great for an out of town team), but this year we are shooting for first place

The following weekend, May 4th, the Kids and the female team compete at the 5th Kids Cup and 2nd Copa Bela.

Team GDJJ at the 2013 San Francisco International Open

Team GD Jiu-Jitsu took a small, yet formidable army to the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation 2013 San Francisco International Open. With only three competitors, Nova Uniao scored a surprising 28 points. Sarah Black led the way, winning the female/purple/middle weight division, as well as the the open weight. Also, scoring big for the team was Jimmy Watson. Watson won the blue/masters/middle division. Danny Parks took third place at the blue/senior 2/Heavy.Congratulation team!
