GD Jiu Jitsu at the 2017 IBJJF American Nationals

[By Danny OD]

The 2017 IBJJF American Nationals took place at the Sports Center of Las Vegas from July 6-8. The tournament always draws competitors from around the country despite being held about a month after the World Championships. The 2017 edition included competitors from Gracie Barra, Alliance, Atos, Gracie Humaita, Carlson Gracie Team and Zenith, among others. GD Jiu Jitsu brought competitors for both gi and no-gi divisions and came back with fantastic results. Robert Shaw took home gold in the Master 2 Super Heavy division. Robert’s impressive performance was followed up by a promotion to blue belt the following week. Alex Benikov also took home gold in the Master 2 category as a Lightweight. Alex submitted all of his opponents en route to gold. In the Purple belt adult Super Heavyweight division, Kevin LePert used his guard passing skills to defeat all of his opponents. Kevin often uses his dynamic guard and triangle attacks to submit his opponents but showed his guard passing skills were just as formidable. Lightweight Nick Flores also had an amazing weekend in Vegas. He won gold in the Master’s 1 category in both gi and no-gi. Nick’s tournament success in 2017 will provide great momentum going into the Master’s Worlds in late August. In the Brown belt Master 2 Middleweight no-gi division, Jody Smith submitted 2 opponents with leg locks to earn his spot at the top of the podium. Jody’s dynamic leg attacks threw his opponents off as both finishes came early on in his matches. Congratulations to all the GD Jiu Jitsu competitors!
