Gustavo Dantas is a fourth degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Andre Pederneiras. Along with being a world-class competitor and having over 20 years of coaching experience, Gustavo is an accomplished public speaker as well as a certified Mental & Life Coach with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). Gustavo left Brazil in 1999 with a few thousand dollars, two bags, and one teenage dream: to have his own academy where he could make his living through teaching the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which continues to be what he is most passionate about in life.

After many years of sacrifice and dedication, the Gustavo Dantas Jiu-Jitsu Academy was established in Tempe, Arizona on March 6th, 2012, re-enforcing the statement, “Believe in your dreams. Hard work pays off”.

Prior to opening his own academy, Gustavo was the Jiu-Jitsu coach at Arizona Combat Sports for eleven years, where he achieved his 2-0 Mixed Martial Arts record. During that time, Gustavo started the mission of promoting Jiu-Jitsu in the state of Arizona and now serves as the Vice-President of the Arizona State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. Under his guidance, a small “in-house” tournament with less than 40 competitors in 2001 grew into a well-respected competition with over 700 competitors from all over the country in 2011, helping Arizona to be recognized as one of the top Jiu-Jitsu areas in the United States.

In addition to running his academy full-time, Gustavo is the co-founder of the non-profit organization Live Jiu-Jitsu, where he continues to build champions on and off the mat in Arizona. He hopes to spread his coaching philosophy to more Jiu-Jitsu practitioners around the world through his program titled Inner Discovery for Outer Success. In his words, “I want to help people to perform to the best of their abilities and reach their full potential on and off the mat. I struggled with performance anxiety throughout my competition career, and I was able to overcome it using the techniques that I share in my program. These fundamental concepts and techniques helped me succeed, and I believe this program can help others too”. For more information about Inner Discovery for Outer Success, check out
