This is an amazing atmosphere for not just adults but the whole family. Even if you wanna do it just as a personal goal to lose weight and have fun doing it, or a little more serious to compete. They have something for everyone. Me as a woman I enjoy it as a self defense class. I feel this is almost the closest thing to real world attack. You will most likely be on the ground and need to get off your back or choke someone out from the bottom. My lovely saying "They don't tap in the real world!" Just check them out. We are more like family here than anything else. We look out for each other and help in anyway we can!

My family and I have been training at GD Jiu Jitsu for over 6 years. We enjoy the positive vibe at this location. The gym is very clean. They offer so many class times from 6:30am to 6:30pm Monday through Friday. Also, they have open mat during the weekend. The coaches are very knowledgeable and experienced in the art of jiu jitsu. I definitely would recommend this academy!

I'm older (almost 50) and out of shape (I wear an A6 gi). I cant do anything about my age, but I figured I could work on my weight. I was really self conscious about coming in. I met and talked with Gustavo and he made me feel at ease. The people and trainers have been great and a real help. This is definitely something out if my comfort zone, but day by day it's getting better and better and I have never sweated more in my life, definitely a calorie burner! It's been great.

What Makes Jiu Jitsu Different than Other Forms of Exercise?

By Alec Baulding

You Learn a Skill While Exercising

The best time to begin your journey in training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is now. While Jiu Jitsu is not the first activity that many people consider when they look to start a new hobby, it’s probably the best decision that you could ever make. Training Jiu Jitsu is a form of exercise but more fun than more traditional ways of exercising. You can choose to run on a treadmill for an hour listening to music and watching the television screens in front of you to help pass the time or you could spend that same hour gaining more strength and flexibility while learning a skill that might one day help protect yourself and your family, all while hanging out with your friends.

You Will Make New Friends

Jiu Jitsu will make working out something you will no longer dread but look forward to throughout your day. Your social network will grow as you hang out with a large group of individuals with similar interests. Job opportunities, referrals for services, and inside contacts will open up for you. It is nearly impossible to not become close with your training partners. When you work hard as a group, travel together to compete, and grow together, strong bonds are formed that often lead to great friendships.

You Will Build Lifestyle Habits

Doing Jiu Jitsu is a lifestyle. If you had lots of bad habits before they will be significantly harder to maintain because you will want to be in top conditioning for training. Eating healthy, getting in shape, and staying in shape will become your normal routine and will be more purposeful. You can try to keep those bad habits but you will see how they directly affect your performance in an adverse way.

You Will Sharpen Your Analytical Skills

Your mind will be sharper from having to remember new moves and from trying to apply them on a resisting opponent. You’ll begin to calm down as your worries from home and everyday life fall away as you will have to focus all of your energy on your opponent trying to tap you out. You may have to find new ways to practice other than just drilling techniques and sparring. Of course, everyone drills the techniques but there are different ways to practice. If you want to progress very fast you need to think about the technique(s) that you’re learning and how you can connect it to other techniques that you have learned. You won’t always have an answer to all of your questions and that’s okay. What’s important is that you get in the habit of asking questions and thinking about Jiu Jitsu.

You Will Learn to Overcome Adversity

While all of these benefits are unique to Jiu Jitsu, keep in mind that you will have to continually put in work to reap these rewards. There will be days where you will perform terribly. You will forget techniques and you will definitely get tapped out. This is all a very important part of the process. Because the more consistent you are and the more classes you attend, the more you will grow. It’s easy for newer students to be very hard on themselves because they are always comparing themselves to others. You just need to focus on your own progress and on perfecting the techniques that you’re learning.

The best thing you can do is to start training today. Don’t wait. It will be the best decision of your life.
